Origin

The ancients spared no effort in their learning,
Work begun in youth is completed only in age.
What is learned from paper always feels shallow;
To truly know this matter, one must practice it oneself.

About a month ago, by chance, I came across screenshots of several websites I had built many years ago. Among them were a medical professional site I made with Drupal 14 years ago when I was studying medicine, an English-only software testing website I built with WordPress in my spare time 10 years ago, and a structured junk site where I scraped several gigabytes of Clinical Trials data 5 years ago. Of course, there were naturally also blogs I once failed to keep writing.

Those sites whose content I once burned the midnight oil to produce in my youth have long vanished into the dust of time, hardly stirring many ripples of memory. Only when I looked at an article on the home page of my 2017 blog did I stare for a long time, full of feeling. It was an extremely ordinary piece of content. Although I could no longer see the full text, that tiny bit of information in the excerpt somehow pulled my soul back into the past.

It turned out that the summer of that year had been extraordinarily hot, hot enough for me to write a separate post about it. What was I doing back then? In July (month 7) of that year, Company P’s Shanghai office was still on Hechuan Road and had not yet moved to Daning. Every day, I was recklessly clashing with that Malaysian line manager, a thoroughly explosive young man who would argue with heaven, earth, and the air whenever something rubbed me the wrong way. I even said to him in a cross-team KPI communication meeting:

Even you set the target as 100%, I’m ******* fine with it!

After pulling such a jerk move, I still managed to survive at the company. I have to say that former Malaysian boss of mine was indeed broad-minded.

If I had not happened to see that post, these fragments of memory would probably have faded away into the years gone by.

Recording is memory itself, and also a remembrance of youth.

As it happens, I started using Obsidian this year to take notes. Compared with the messy content I used to keep in Notes, I finally switched to a new tool to improve the efficiency of recording. In addition, I officially started learning Python programming. I had already recorded some scattered notes on general knowledge, so I thought perhaps publishing articles could strengthen the effect of learning.

And so, the nation’s ideal husband was born.

The name the nation’s ideal husband has no special meaning. It is simply because I own too many domain names, so I chose this relatively short and easy-to-remember one for deployment.

Goals

Starting to study computer science only after reaching middle age probably means encountering a few more challenges. But that is how life is: not everything happens at exactly the right time. Otherwise, what would be the fun of life?

• Learned to deploy container services with Traefik
• Self-hosted commonly used internet services

Pen Name

Bamboo slips and silk burned to smoke; imperial enterprise turned hollow,
Passes and rivers still locked the First Emperor’s abode in vain.
The pit ashes had not yet cooled when Shandong rose in chaos;
It turned out Liu and Xiang had never read books.

Although Liu and Xiang did not read books, in this age of technological explosion, lifelong learning is still the right path.

Supplement: I originally used Imperial Enterprise Hollow as my pen name, but at work colleagues more often call me Professor, so I might as well change the pen name too. The persona becomes more consistent.
